The Toyota targa top electric hybrid powered sports coupe could begin production as soon as 2019, according to several Japanese media reports. It is said that whatever sports coupe is, its going to based on the Toyota GR HV Sports Concept that was shown at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show back in October. However, the concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show was pretty much a Toyota 86 with a different nose, a targa top, along with a hybrid powertrain.
We don’t know much about power figures, nor was it mentioned for the GR HV Sports Concept either. Reports also mention that the powertrain will be a 2.0L gasoline engine mated to a TSH-R (Toyota Sports Hybrid Racing) system, which is what powers Toyota’s TS050 hybrid Le Mans race car. Engines could be derived from either a BMW inline-4 or a Subaru flat-four. BMW and Toyota have both partnered together to create the next generation Z4 and a yet unnamed Toyota sports car. Component sharing is something these two companies may do with this collaboration.
Expect the Toyota 86 and Subaru BR-Z twins to see their replacements coming in 2020.
