Volvo planning to release all-electric semi in 2019

Volvo Trucks indicated its plans to build and test an all-electric semi truck. The company hopes to start testing their electric trucks by building a pilot program partners this year to help test the all-electric truck on European roads before production begins in 2019. Unlike Tesla’s Semi, which has been ordered by many over the highway companies for regional and interstate logistics, the Volvo electric semi will initially focus on urban logistics in dense European cities. The emphasis is to reduce local carbon emissions for both consumer and commercial vehicles in city centers. Volvo Trucks president Claes Nilsson said, “By using electrically powered and quieter trucks for goods transport in urban areas, we meet several challenges simultaneously. Without disturbing noise and exhaust gases, it will be possible to operate in more sensitive city centres. Transport may also take place throughout less busy periods, for example in late evening and at night.”

Nilsson also indicated that Volvo is working towards electrifying other transportation options.
